Five Minutes

with hollie Smith Victoria Tait catches up with New Zealand’s first lady of soul and jazz.

Singer-songwriter hollie Smith is well-known to New Zealanders. She has worked with numerous bands – trinity Roots and Fat Freddy’s Drop to name a few – and her single Bathe in The River (2006) has become iconic within the rich history of New Zealand music. in April, hollie released her third solo album, Water Or Gold. it went straight to No. 1 of the New Zealand music charts, where it remained for three weeks. Now, hollie is taking her music to the road, but without a band. the water or Gold Acoustic tour comes to Christchurch on Saturday 24th, with hollie performing at Blue Smoke. For those who have not heard your new album, can you tell us a little bit about it? it’s been a little while [nearly six years], but this is the third record. i think it’s a little bit edgier than previous albums. i wrote a lot of it on guitar, which i think comes across. expect some of my typical production on it and ballad numbers. What can we expect from your acoustic performance? it’s just a chilled, intimate night with me with my trusty sidekick marika hodgson on bass, guitar and technology. i’m doing mild versions of my new stuff as well as some old favourites. What has been your most memorable show? i was lucky enough to be invited to the montreal [international] Jazz Festival a couple of years ago. Amazing city, amazing people and an amazing festival. i performed to about 50,000 people. it was hard work, but was a high for sure.

Being a singer-songwriter, from where do you draw inspiration? And what is your favourite part of the process? every part of music and being creative. it’s a love/ hate relationship, so not sure what bit is my favourite. there’s isn’t a theme to Water Or Gold, but i collect thoughts and experiences as they pass. What artists/songs are you listening to right now? i’m still loving Kimbra’s latest album [The Golden Echo], and listening to a lot of [hip-hop artist] Kendrick lamar, Cat Stevens and [hip-hop group] Sa-Ra at the moment. What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger? that everything’s going to turn to sh*t several times and that’s what’s supposed to happen. You can’t control it. What would you like to be remembered for? Being a kind and generous person, but, you know, not all the time. i can totally be an a**hole.

Diamonds & Tiaras Fashion stylist Angela Stone speaks to Victoria Tait about her role on reality television series, The Real Housewives of Auckland.

Style | profile

“My friends know who I am, and they support me. They know that I am all for being real.”

Every Tuesday night, the highs and lows of Christchurch’s own Angela Stone is beaming into living rooms around the nation. Since the premiere on August 22nd on Bravo, Angela has officially become ‘a real housewife of Auckland’, joining five other high-flying socialites to makeup New Zealand’s version of the American The Real Housewives reality TV programme. Angela was the first housewife who signed up to the show, after she was approached by the show’s producers while working in Christchurch. “They told me there was the possibility of the Real Housewives franchise coming to New Zealand and would I be interested in being a part of it? I met with them several times before signing the contracts so that both parties knew it was a good fit. “It was a whirlwind – filming commenced very soon after the contracts were signed and it was four months of crazy-busy full-on shooting!” None of the cast – Anne Batley Burton, Michelle Blanchard, Gilda Kirkpatrick, Julia Sloane, Louise Wallace or Angela – viewed the entire series ahead of its airing, with only snippets available prior to the release. “It’ll certainly be interesting!” Angela tells Style. At the time of print, the first two episodes had aired, the Gucci gloves removed and the first tears shed – Michelle Blanchard’s question of whether Angela Stone was a plus-size model creating a stir on and off screen. In this exclusive interview, we find out a bit more about Angela’s experience as a ‘real’ Auckland housewife.

Could you describe a typical day of filming? So generally we met up in the mornings, had our hair and makeup done, and went over what we’d be doing that day. Some days the crew would just focus on one or two of us, following us as we went about our day, other days we would all be together. There were, of course, various evening events we all attended as well – parties, launches. Are you worried about how you will be portrayed to the public? To a point. I think if you are as real as possible during filming, which I always tried to do, then you don’t give much to be used against you. But, in saying that, the drama was heightened for entertainment purposes, and there is crafty editing to be wary of – so we’ll see! An American journalist described The Real Housewives shows as “Jerry Springer but with Gucci, false lashes and hair extensions”. Would you say this is true? I’d say that that’s not totally inaccurate! Although almost all of the Kiwi housewives have hair extensions. Not me though, I’m all real. What do you think your friends will think of your role in this show? Factual or fictional? My friends know who I am, and they support me. They know that I am all for being real, so they will know when the show comes into power.

Have you made friends with the other housewives? Absolutely. Not all of us get along – I’d say there’s probably one housewife that each person isn’t too fond of. Real friendships have been made on the show, and that is one of the best things to come out of it. What have you learnt about the reality TV world? It’s more real than consumers would initially think – or at least, the New Zealand version is. You watched the crazy American housewives shows and thought, how can that possibly be natural? Having been on a show myself now, I know that it is less scripted and staged than I first thought. What has been the biggest challenge with becoming a ‘real housewife’? Being away from my family and my dog, Versace Stone, more than usual. I love my kids to pieces so having to work my time

with them around the show’s schedule was difficult. What do you hope to achieve by being part of this show? I went into this seeing it as a fantastic opportunity for my business, to expose my brand to the country. I hope that after seeing the show, I will be able to help empower more New Zealand women with my fashion styling services and teenage girls to be kind to themselves and others. Who and what drives you? It may sound silly, but I drive myself. I realised a long time ago that the only person who will always look out for you is you. The only person who can make positive changes in your life is you. Learning to love yourself is the most crucial step to being happy. I’ve always been a motivated person, which is lucky. I believe in meditation as a way of expanding and healing the mind and look to successful and empowering women, like Oprah Winfrey, for inspiration.

The Real Angela

Angela’s modelling career started at the age of 14, and took her to Milan and beyond, where she gained first-hand experience in the world of high fashion. She returned to Christchurch and, at 21, founded Portfolio Model Agency, which became one of New Zealand’s most renowned modelling agencies. Portfolio continues today, under the directorship of Mel Radford-Brown. Angela continues to model, runs Angela Stone Consulting – a business that offers style advice in both private and corporate styling sessions – and released a clothing line in 2015. She has also written a book, The Style Guide – her “little black book of fashion industry secrets”. What is your advice to women juggling, relationships, motherhood and a career? Stays focussed, and remember that you are responsible for the path your life takes. If there is anything in your life that you don’t like, you have the power to change it. While it certainly can be stressful juggling those three things, it is 100% worth it. I look at my children, my career and my relationships and only feel hugely fulfilled and proud.

The World’s largesT YachT Azzam (Arabic for “resolute”) is the world’s largest, privately owned yacht. The ownership of the yacht is shrouded in secrecy. However, we know it was commissioned by Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the United Arab Emirate. Launched in April 2013, this 180 metre (590 ft) yacht has an estimated cost of USD$605 million (NZD$867.8 million). This is around $100 million more than the second largest private motor yacht, Eclipse, owned by Russan Roman Abramovich, who has a net worth of nearly USD$10 billion. The features include a main salon with a length of 29 metres designed by French interior designer Christophe Leoni. The brief was to produce a sophisticated and yet timeless interior with a turn-of-the-century, Empire style. The yacht also carries a submarine and a missile defence system.

Rescuing RacecouRse

Hill EstatE

Three years of construction have seen Racecourse Hill Estate restored to its former glory. Victoria Tait speaks with Lia Brown, Director at Craig Brown Construction, about this extraordinary project.

Following the September 4th earthquake in 2010, the majority of us would have deemed Racecourse Hill Estate unfixable and not financially viable to repair. “The major damage from the earthquake was to the ground floor exterior, which was mainly double brick. Most of the brick walls had either collapsed or were damaged. The brick columns at the front of the house had actually twisted several degrees out of alignment. All of the seven chimneys had either collapsed onto or through the roof into the interior of the house. The lath and plaster ceilings in most of the rooms had collapsed and in one room downstairs, a false ceiling had collapsed,” wrote Ivan Taylor (Racecourse Hill Estate: Its history and its people). Yet, when the estate was sold in 2012 on an as-is-where-is basis, new owners Brian and Bernice Cribb had a very different vision from everyone else. They not only saw the potential of what they could achieve in creating a stunning family home, but also what could be saved and restored for future generations. Surrounded by an established garden and north-facing deck and terrace, the home sits like a grand old dame in its surroundings. The house was originally built in 1912, designed by renowned architect Cecil Wood. Situated only six kilometres from Darfield, Racecourse Hill Homestead spans over two storeys with a floor area of 816m². There is a total of four living areas, nine bedrooms, a billiard room, servant quarters and six bathrooms. The addition of a new garage with separate toilet and wash facilities, and updated kitchen are the only alterations to the original layout. Although there is also a secret room, cleverly thought of and constructed Craig Brown’s foreman. No one can find it unless they know it is there; it’s accessed via indistinguishable panelling. “Brian and Bernice were very firm about retaining features of the historic homestead,” says Lia Brown, director at Craig Brown Construction. “There are interior doors with cracks in them that they wanted to be kept original”. The interior décor was designed by Liz Courtney, who used authentic William Morris wallpaper to create an elegant and timeless feel to the home. The owners also purchased the St Teresa’s church from Colgate and relocated this to the estate in July 2013; another iconic piece of history salvaged by the Cribbs. Their determination and hard work have been rewarded with the estate winning the gold and supreme award in the Registered Master Builder 2016 House of the Year under the category Renovation Award over $500,000 and Renovation of the Year. Speaking with Lia Brown, we find out what was involved in this exceptional restoration.

What process did you go through to determine the viability of this project? When it was listed for sale after the earthquakes, it was deemed non-repairable. Our clients went to have a look at it and saw the potential and went against engineers and insurers advice and purchased it then started the renovation/restoration. What were the biggest challenges in this restoration? Ensuring that the features of the home remained to retain the character of the home. How much of the home was restored? The entire property. A few changes in the layout of downstairs living, and the garage was added along with commercial butlers’ kitchen to accommodate future [possibilities as a] venue for weddings. The kitchen and bathrooms were modernised yet are quite timeless. How long did this project take and what size team did you have working on it? The job was two years solid, but was spread out over three years. At times there were 20 tradesmen working at the same time. We managed the building aspect with five builders. We had to take our time as it was attention to detail and not your average home to restore.

Can you describe your favourite feature of the house? Aesthetically my favourite aspect of the house is the stunning billiards room with the curved ceilings. This room oozes charm and heritage. The tongue and groove flooring along with the timber panelling and two cosy fireplaces; it is a lovely room to be in. However, my favourite aspect of this house is venturing into the maids’ quarters. There is a formal stairwell that is very grand, but there is also a small, discreet stairwell that was used by maids and servants back in the day. There must have been many secrets and stories that we know nothing about. Did you manage to selvedge many of the original materials? We re-used most of the materials in the home, i.e. timber panelling as it needed to be kept as original same with internal doors. Where some materials were beyond repair, we had to make mouldings/skirting to the same as existing. This took months of work.

Do you think we have been hasty in demolishing historical homes in Christchurch? In many cases definitely. Thank goodness Racecourse Hill was purchased by the Cribbs as it was destined for demolition. It goes to show that some buildings could have been saved that were demolished, and Racecourse Hill was one of them. In June, we attended the Heritage Awards where Racecourse Hill homestead was a joint winner of the Canterbury Heritage Domestic Saved and Restored Award. At this event, we were shown a short film of Christchurch and its iconic buildings before, immediately after the earthquakes, and presently. I was moved to tears by what I saw. So much of our heritage hastily demolished. This project goes to show that with the right people involved we can do our best to save these buildings (within reason, of course) although some were definitely beyond repair. There are so many empty lots around Christchurch now where there were iconic homes and buildings which makes me think, could some of them have been saved given a passionate person with a reasonably big budget? What would your advice be to someone looking to take on a large-scale restoration project, such as this? Talk to an experienced building team and engineers collaboratively. Ensure that your builder has experience in large and challenging restorations, get to know them and trust their advice and work as a team to achieve a common goal. It is especially important to be upfront and open about your budget in the planning and design stages.

BOOTS AND ALL!

BUSINESS OWNER, AND WELL KNOWN BUSINESSWOMAN

Finally ... two months past our expected completion date and with things still to finish we have moved into a newly constructed home, and after a 16-month build I have some tips I’d like to share with anyone else who is considering building. 1) Don’t (!!!!) even start if you think it’s going to be a walk in the park. It’s a massive commitment, financially and emotionally. Constant decisions are required and there are a multitude of places where instructions and interpretations can become entangled and confused, leaving all parties at loggerheads. Think carefully, think ahead and communicate clearly. I’ve noticed that a lot of Kiwi tradespeople tend to be the strong, silent types, so don’t be put off if they don’t say much back. 2) Work to a budget, because no-one enters into a new build without a firm

idea of what the financial commitment should be, but be prepared to have that challenged by concerned contractors trying to help you realise your dreams, because ideas inevitably expand. The supply-and-demand marketplace that exists in Christchurch is also a factor in fluctuating prices. Contractors are busy, some more than others, and this is often reflected in their attendance at the project and in their quotes. The reality, as in my own industry, real estate, is that ‘cheapest is rarely best’. 3) Wipe your feet. This is just an on-site observation. You get to the exciting stage when it’s time to move inside. Some of the floor coverings may be in situ and walls painted, and the odd contractor who you don’t know rocks up with work boots that look like they’ve climbed a mountain pass in Bolivia. As an owner, it’s heart-breaking and it’s given me a new appreciation of what vendors expect and deserve when

they get their agent to put a ‘shoes off, please’ sign in place. Let your expectations be known and short of these, swear!!!!! 4) Expect issues. It’s not plain sailing on most jobs. There will always be compromises and sometimes it actually doesn’t all come together till the last, but be assured that it will. Now if only we could stop setting the alarm off in the early hours and I could sort out how to work the new appliances, then we could get on with completing what has been a significant challenge and the fulfilment of a dream! Thanks to everyone involved helped, you know who you are and also to my ever patient husband John, and in case you are wondering this storyline is now closed! In the meantime, keep warm and enjoy your home.

NaTIve vs

Exotic PLanting Landscape architect Craig Wilson explores the native vs. exotic planting debate. There’s an interesting current debate being played out in the media, exploring the merits of exotic versus native plantings. It’s a multi-faceted, ongoing discussion with political, ecological and historical undertones. Putting aside the ideology and looking from a garden design perspective, it’s still an interesting concept to consider. Typically I’ve found in my practice, that a client requesting a native or exotic garden is simply stating their individual preference for the ‘look’ created by the specific plant selection.

I’ve also noticed clients will request a native garden with the idea that it will be easier to look after and best meet the brief for a ‘low-maintenance’ garden, and they will request an exotic garden if they want colour and seasonal interest. I’d suggest that if you were to look closely, you’d be pushed to find many residential garden plantings that are completely composed of either all natives or all exotics. I’d also suggest that for a Canterbury residential garden context, a blend of native and exotics will produce a better aesthetic and a richer

Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

garden allegory if that’s what you want to achieve. If you’re contemplating a new planting this spring, before you plant what you’ve always preferred, consider looking at your plant selection with different eyes. Why not try using native species with a formal layout? If you’ve always liked the structural hedge look with traditional buxus, or Portuguese laurel, you could select a native specimen to do the same job creating a dense comparative hedge. Corokia and Lophomyrtus would make great alternatives and bring an injection of colour instead of dark green. If you find

natives your default setting for low-maintenance reasons, why not try adding a flowering dogwood to your mass planting of flax or Arthropodium creating a layer of restrained height, while adding seasonal highlights with no maintenance. In Christchurch, we are blessed with a rich and varied garden heritage. Imagine our city without the flowering cherries of Hagley Park, or the podocarp remnant of Deans Bush. Both have a significant part to play in our growing sense of regional identity and in how you can choose to shape the garden environment in and around your home.

BIG MEDAL HAUL FOR GOOM LANDSCAPES AT “NZ LANDSCAPE OLYMPICS” With the recent closing of the Rio Olympics, New Zealanders are celebrating our international sporting successes. Locally, Goom Landscapes are celebrating receiving numerous accolades in the New Zealand Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2016. The competition included 54 entries nationwide (commercial and residential). The illustrious judging panel was comprised of Penny Cliffin (head judge of Ellerslie flower show and landscaping tutor), Elle Anderson (past LIANZ president and landscaping tutor) and John Cocks (aka “Cocksy”, tv presenter) who travelled the length and breadth of the country visiting each entry. The four categories were design, construction, horticulture, and garden management together with three overall awards for sustainability, landscape and design of the year. Goom Landscapes Entries TAIT Electronics Campus - Commercial Project • Gold Award - Landscape Construction - Commercial Project • Gold Award - Landscape Horticulture - Commercial Project • Best Landscape Sustainability 2016 The TAIT Electronics campus is an expansion behind the existing TAIT electronics site which required a park like setting for staff and the public to enjoy, built to the highest commercial specifications. It includes walking tracks, varied seating areas and exercise stations amongst existing buildings. Fruit trees and food gardens maximised the use of the garden space. This is Goom Landscapes second time winning the Landscape Sustainability award, cementing our reputation as being committed to the efficient use of resources and the interaction of landscapes with the environment. The judges commented “This large electronics campus provides an innovative workplace for a large staff… open for the local community to pass through (walking or biking). The sculpted carpark surface feeds into a wetland pond and boulder lined water course, thus providing an important storm water management function. Staff facilities include outdoor dining areas, fruiting trees, and an impressive exercise circuit and basketball hoop (well used by local youth) and a green roof area… the campus provided a wide range of sustainable environmental and social features.”

Landscape of the Year Award - Green Residence Best Design of the Year - Green Residence Gold Award - Landscape Construction - Large Residential Project Gold Award - Landscape Design - Large Residential Project

Our green project entry required existing large trees to be retained, concealment of a garden shed and the linking of an existing deck into a new entertaining area. Access restrictions meant entry to the construction site was through the garage. The client works from home and wanted internal views developed using design which created a fresh contemporary outlook. An outdoor dining area was included to efficiently use the existing space and draw people outdoors. The judges commented: “The garden was a total revelation, hidden from the outside world. You walked into a haven, created not only for intimate family living but also entertaining with friends. The repetition of design elements created a strong connection between house and garden, with very good integration of existing and new aspects. This garden embraced you with its warmth, its playful elements and its surprise.” It was noted the innovative design used new and interesting ways to compose landscape elements, a masterful command of asymmetric balance, elements interlocking and overlapping, allowing the viewer a visual compositional feast. The Wilby Residence Project • Silver Award - Landscape Construction - Large Residential Project • Bronze Award - Landscape Design - Large Residential Project This project provided the challenges of a tight site, an awkward boundary line and house position and a stony soil structure which required specific design to deal with significant drainage issues. These awards acknowledge the commitment of our team to producing landscaping of the highest quality, regardless of the challenges and restrictions of the site. Goom Landscapes don’t just make you a garden, we create you a unique lifespace.

HarNeSSiNg ThE Sun We all know that the consumption of non-renewable sources like oil, gas and coal is increasing at an alarming rate. Therefore we need to look at other sources of renewable energy: solar, wind and geothermal for example. For domestic purposes and everyday energy, solar is the best option. Even though many countries have started utilising solar energy, extensively, we all still have a long way to go to fulfil the daily demand for energy.

Solar FaSt FactS • Solar energy, harnessed from the sun, is a renewable source of energy, unlike oil which is non-renewable. • The sun has produced energy for billions of years, yet we have only started harnessing this as a domestic energy source in recent years. • Solar energy does not produce any pollutants; it is one of the cleanest sources of energy. • Solar energy is a completely free source of energy, and found in abundance. • The earth gets 174 petawatts of incoming solar radiation, from this around 30% is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed by oceans, clouds and land masses. (Petawatt is a power measurement unit. The petawatt is equal to one billion million watts.) • Solar energy is converted by green plants into chemical energy, through photosynthesis. This creates biomass that then makes up the fossil fuels. • Countries have used solar energy to power their spaceships. • There is almost no maintenance with solar panels; they will last for years. • Most of Christopher Nolan’s movie Inception, starring environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio, was made using solar power.

COlOuR FORECAST

What will the most fashionable homes be sporting in the next couple of seasons? Think shimmer and glitz, white with black accents, unexpected colour combinations and iridescent as well as toned-down hues. Luxe metallic finishes, whites with charcoals and earthy greys, dusky tones, and exuberant pops of bright colour are all on trend for the coming months. While it may seem like only yesterday we were celebrating the new year; colour forecasters are already predicting our palettes for 2017 and 2018. Dress your walls with earthy hues or dusky tones and you’ll be right on trend. Dusky pinks are here now (think Resene Ebb), but we’ll also see a rise in popularity of dusky blues

and greens such as Resene Duck Egg Blue. Colours like Resene Secrets are bang on with the trend for cool Nordic landscapes, where icy colours come to the fore. And the Scandinavian look is here to stay, with a continuing trend towards whites and offwhites, with earthy tones. Darker stains are giving way to more natural, lighter stains, like Resene Woodsman Natural, and lighter rimu colours. Wallpapers are becoming more adventurous, providing a lush, stylish backdrop along with a playful ambience. Glamorous, shiny wallpapers are also on trend, with metallic finishes and a hint of shimmer.

Want more intensity? Pops of colour remain strong, including vibrant jewel tones, such as teal blue. We’re also seeing an increase in colour blocking, a design technique that uses blocks of colour, either in similar shades or opposites, together. “It’s a great way to introduce colour,” says Resene colour consultant Deanna Hills, “especially if you’ve got a square room. You might colour block half a wall, and it could look like a headboard. Or you could colour block random areas and nooks, or start from the ceiling and go diagonally down to the floor.” Stairwells are often colour blocked, with the bottom half painted charcoal, for example, and the top half painted white. “Colour blocking is really fun,” says Deanna. “It makes something of a space.” Another continuing trend is brightly coloured front doors. “People are opening up to having a bit more personality,” says Deanna, “and coloured front doors are a big trend. I’ve done a couple of reds, like Resene Red Berry, as well as Resene Wild Thing, which is yellow – a charcoal house with a yellow front door.” From wake-up shades of teal and red to cool icy blues and dusky pinks, and smatterings of black and white, whether you prefer an achromatic colour scheme or one with a host of vibrant hues, the coming season’s colours has something to suit all tastes. The re-development is known as Project Blue Sky (the name reflecting the translation of the school name: “wide sky shelter”) and consists of three phases, the first two of which have been completed and the third is underway. improvements include the bright-blue hockey turf, the new Performing Arts building, gibson Centre (iT Centre and library), the curved Science building and the homestead, Te Koraha, which was built in the late 1800s yet remains, sitting comfortably amongst the changing campus.

St Margaret’s college St Margaret’s College was the first to rebuild a church, auditorium and gymnasium in Christchurch following the devastating earthquakes. With over 80% of the school damaged, the school has undergone major redevelopment. in February, St Margaret’s opened an impressive new library, e-learning centre and classroom block.

John McFadden, Business owner and Managing Director of Harcourts gold comments... “It is an absolute privilege to lead the Harcourts Gold team and to be a part of the success story that is Papanui. From humble beginnings, Papanui remains our first and flagship office, now with our franchise in its 20th year, we have grown significantly, and are proud to have served our local communities and Canterbury’s real estate needs for such a long time. We appreciate all the support our clients have shown us during the good times, and how we have worked together in the hard times over the last few years. Your ongoing support means the world to us! Punching above our weight, it is an enormous achievement that a local business can out perform real estate offices based in international locations including California and companies in China, Indonesia, South Africa and Australia, as well as every other New Zealand office. It is true that our teams’ big heart, hard work and massive spirit is without equal anywhere. “

Harcourts gold is proud to have been part of the fabric of the local communities that make up Papanui since 1997. Since its inception, Harcourts gold has seen itself as not just a real estate company, but a team that can make a real impact in our local community. From supporting our local Community Constables in our early years to our recent contribution to the Canterbury Community Hospital, we value supporting local businesses (including the local coffee shops!) and – especially – organisations that support people in need. Over the past three years we have had an association with Families for Families, raising funds and sponsoring care packages (between 800 and 1,000 each year), and our team have also supported this initiative by packing the parcels.

“Smiles will get a bit brighter...” … for those people for whom dental care is unaffordable, with the contribution of $10,000 by Harcourts gold in conjunction with the Harcourts Foundation to the Canterbury Charity Hospital.

We are also involved and provide sponsorships to the Inspire foundation, an organisation that is committed to supporting our talented youth in Canterbury.

Paris

ReDiscoveReD

The city of love, fashion and food and culture. Most likely you have already visited the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, The Louvre as well as shopped the luxurious Avenue des ChampsÉlysées. But, for those looking to rediscover the city, we’ve put together our best off-the-beaten-track destinations to shop, eat, drink, and relax in Paris. woRDs viCToriA TAiT

Parisian Patisseries

Les Trois Marchés de Catherine B This museum-like boutique is situated on the left bank at 1 Rue Guisarde. stocked with an amazing collection of vintage chanel and Hermès. The collection of Hermès scarfs is so extensive it’s like seeing an entire encyclopedic collection. There is also a selection of Kelly, Birkin, and Mademoiselle Bags to die for.

Le Perchoir situated at 14 Rue crespin du Gast, this ultra-cool rooftop bar was the No. 1 location for aftershow drinks during Paris Fashion week. with a 360-degree view of the cityscape, it’s a perfect place for a drink any time of the year (including winter, when there are heaters and blankets). Most of the food is designed to share including the côte de boeuf (beef ribs) as well whole roast chicken with side dishes of heirloom tomatoes and mashed potatoes.

One of the first things you should do in Pairs is ‘eat cake’. The neighbourhood around the Left Bank’s Rue du Bac is the perfect location for this. The area is overflowing with some of the most extraordinary patisseries and chocolatiers that have been opened by some of the city’s most renowned pastry chefs – Jacques Genin, Philippe conticini, and claire Damon among them. our favourites include; La Pâtisserie des Rêves, Angelina, and the Des Gâteaux et du Pain – owned by one of the few female patissiers, claire Damon.

Colette You might have regularly shopped up a storm at the Galeries Lafayette and even though we do love to visit this incredible department store time and time again, colette is where you should be shopping now. Frequented by Vogue editors and high-fashion elite, this curated high-fashion emporium selects the best of everything from the latest Dior collection to quirky accessories. it’s a store that’s done all the hard work for you, picking the best and most stylish of everything. Look out for their exclusive collaborations with everyone from Karl Lagerfeld to sorel. There’s even a café in which you can relax and take in the whole spectacle.

Perfecting the Pajero Ross Kiddie takes a look at Mitsubishi’s new Pajero Sport.

When Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand recently launched its Pajero Sport I was a little surprised that it was a five-seater vehicle only. Well that has all changed. The Challenger replacement now has seven seats, and it sits competitively in the marketplace amidst a host of other utebased, four-wheel-drive, and sport utility vehicles. Mitsubishi almost pioneered that part of the market in 1996 with its Tritonbased Challenger, and there has been a succession of Challenger models since. Today’s Pajero Sport shares a lot of componentry with Triton, but it is distanced from it in the respect that it is a lot more sophisticated. It is more car-like than ute-like even though it is still built around a ladder chassis, live rear axle and suspension elements that are engineered for the serious off-road journey. The Pajero Sport is also styled so that

it loses any association with the Triton, it looks appealing and most definitely built to the SUV style. It arrives with diesel power only, courtesy of the Triton, it is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit and is rated by Mitsubishi with 135kW and 437Nm. It is a real powerhouse and drives through the sophistication of an eightspeed automatic gearbox. The engine/ gearbox combination is rather special, especially so with the number of ratios, there is almost seamless gearing offering the best structures for both off-road challenges, and smooth momentum for the everyday commute. Of course, the Pajero Sport also gets a seriously low ratio transfer system for when those four-wheeldrive tracks beckon. You can guarantee the mechanical elements have been engineered to stand the test of time, after all Mitsubishi offer a 10-year driveline warranty.

The Pajero Sport lands here in two variants, effectively low-grade or highgrade – XLS or VRX. The test car was a VRX, and it lists at $63,990, the XLS landing at $58,990. For that price, it gets a strong specification list for comfort and convenience. A few of the major items include full leather trim, heated front seats which are electrically adjustable and state-of-the-art electronic systems for infotainment, most are operable through a central screen display. The Pajero Sport gets all of the high-tech gear Mitsubishi are putting into their four-wheel-drive vehicles these days. There is a myriad of electronic and mechanical elements to aid grip both off-road and in close confine sealed road driving. There is also a suite of safety features which keep the vehicle out of trouble in the first instance – Smartbrake, misacceleration mitigation system, and forward collision mitigation. Against the clock, it will accelerate to 100km/h from a standstill in 11sec, and is comfortable with a 7.5sec highway overtake (80km/h to 120km/h).

Regarding fuel usage, Mitsubishi has done well to clean out the twincamshaft, 16-valve engine. It is now rated with an eight-litre per 100km (35mpg) combined cycle average; that fits well with the test car’s average showing 9.6l/100km (30mpg) on return to the dealership. Those figures, along with an 8l/100km instantaneous readout at 100km/h (engine speed 1600rpm), makes for economical motoring for a big vehicle which weighs in close to two-tonne. On the subject of weights, the Pajero Sport is also listed with a 3100kg tow rating. At highway speed the Pajero Sport cruises comfortably with little sound intrusion, there is just a subdued diesel throb under load, but that is no louder than any of its competition. The Pajero Sport is big and tall, but it is well balanced and is capable in a corner; that along with its energetic performance provides satisfaction for the driver. The Pajero Sport encapsulates all of the ingredients which made the Challenger so successful here, and it can certainly be counted as a serious contender in what is now a very intense part of the SUV market.

Anne Hudson looks at three very different ceramic artist that all have passion for the same art form yet choose to portray this in very different ways. Taus Ceramics Busy Finch

Anne Hudson

New Zealand has always had a strong ceramic fraternity, but recently there has been an increased interest in the making of objects from clay. As a result, pottery classes are full, as people seek the opportunity to learn how to pot. Pottery is a skill, which can be learnt, but at the same time, it offers a haptic pleasure where the hand, the material and the creative impulse work together as an embodied experience. From womb, cup to coffin, the vessel is intrinsic to human life. Despite many new approaches within the ceramic discourse, most ceramic traditions, no matter where they are located, take as their initial premise a connection with food, drink and storage. There is a consistent link of ceramics with civilised life. When we choose a cup for our coffee, pick up a bowl in our hands, gaze at a beautiful vase of flowers, bring a vessel to our lips, long held associations with the vessel trigger another level of meaning, one where memory, imagination and other embodied notions surface. When we use or gaze at a ceramic form, the surface texture, glaze colour and ornamentation work together and

offer more than its basic functionality. These memory traces work for the handler as well as the maker. My own work – blue slip-cast vessels with altered forms, cracked or seemingly broken edges, and a gestural use of colour – are meant to evoke the sublime nature of an ice landscape. The vessel holds our interest in a vivid colour like the sky above or light shining through water and ice. A fragile work made of pure white porcelain, easily broken but yet strong and complete. The vessel acts as a familiar object being used to convey a sense of fragility and danger, but also of beauty and wonder. Taus Ceramics, by Tim Grocott, make the familiar shape of a whisky hip flask, a form usually made of metal. He re-awakens our interest in the idea of carrying not just liquid refreshment, but also the comfort and warmth drink will give us, and the possibility of music and dance or adventure that may accompany it. The familiar has been given a new context as an art object, but it is its conceptual potential alongside its elegant simplicity that makes us want to have and hold this object.

Similarly, Busy Finch (Tatyanna Meharry) is attempting to brand herself by marketing not just functional pieces for the home, but the opportunity to awaken our senses to colour and texture by creating richly surfaced everyday functional work that stirs memories, and enhances our daily life. Busy Finch offers more than the acquisition of a piece of pottery; we are invited to become part of a community of pottery makers or a club of like-minded aesthetically aware people. Chefs and home cooks alike are looking for vessels or dishes not just as a background to the food they serve but as an essential part of the gourmet experience. These three ceramic artists among others will be exhibiting at Art in a Garden 2016, Flaxmere, Hawarden, from October 27th through to October 30th. They represent very different approaches to ceramics but at the same time, they are connected by the demands of the material and the enormous conceptual potential present in clay. Ceramic artist Natasha Daintry calls the ceramic vessel “a benign existential riddle sitting at our breakfast table”.

EssEntial HomE-spa BEauty Ritual Clemency Alice gives us all the expert advice we need to create a five-star spa treatment without having to leave the house.

With winter drawing to a close and the hint of spring breathing into the first buds of bloom, now is the time to introduce a ‘Home-spa Therapeutic Evening’. The beauty of these home-spa beauty rituals is that they allow you to recharge fully and regain an inner sense of balance. Here are some practical tips to cleanse, reharmonise and restore your mind and body.

Facial steam

s p a b o L O R S C a fl o w w

This will detoxify and eliminate toxins. Fill a large bowl with boiling water and put a large towel over your head, then place your face over the bowl. Close your eyes and relax for 5-10 minutes. For an added aromatherapeutic experience, try adding to the water chamomile blossom or rose petals. (NOTE: Avoid facial steaming if you are asthmatic. If you have sensitive skin, use a warm compress instead.)

natural Body scrub

Calming tea

D

Create a body scrub by mixing native honey with fine organic sugar, juice of a lime and a sprinkle of crushed lavender flowers. Massage a small amount into damp skin and then rinse it off.

T c m b c s f s

Prepare a calming herb tea to induce relaxation. Try marjoram, lemon verbena, lime blossom, chamomile blossom or rose bud tea.

Four reasons You Need To STarT MediTaTiNg Life and wellness coach Annabelle Matson breaks down the simplicity of meditation and shows us how this ancient practice can enhance our wellbeing.

at its essence, meditation is about stillness and connecting with your inner self. However, it’s often considered something that’s mysterious and difficult to achieve, when in fact, it’s one of the oldest and most simple processes there is. it is the nature of your mind to think, and there is a misconception that to meditate means to stop thinking, when really what it’s about is slowing down those racing thoughts and just observing them. The key is not to jump onboard with your thoughts and float away with them. if you don’t give them meaning or fuel them, they will just simply pass through. Here are four reasons you need to start meditating: 1.You’re aLwaYs exhausted, stressed and anxious Meditation helps you to slow down your thinking and allows your body and mind to relax. You’re never more relaxed than when you meditate and will come away feeling

refreshed and ready to face the day. 2.You struggLe to make decisions a lot of the answers you need don’t come from your thinking mind, so use meditation to tap into your intuition. We are all so busy running around; we forget to quieten down long enough to listen to our inner guide. Solutions may not come right away, but you will be surprised at the answers that come forward and the clarity you gain when you create the space to listen to your intuition. 3.You struggLe to staY present if you are always racing towards the next “thing”, unable to feel happy and enjoy the moment, meditation will help to train your brain to stay in the present, a place where you aren’t worried about what happened in the past, and you aren’t concerned about the future. it’s with this focus and awareness of the present moment that your fears, worries and doubts can be transformed and ultimately this has hugely positive impact on how we handle what life throws at us.

4.You have difficuLtY staYing focused our endless tasks and busy lives can create an overload for the brain; it doesn’t know what to process first, so it keeps recycling the same information. Meditation slows down your thinking and allows the information and emotions to pass through, and bit-by-bit we let go of what’s not important. as a result, your thinking is much clearer; you gain a sharp focus on what action to take, rather than getting bogged down by unnecessary detail or emotion. Next time you find yourself feeling a little tense or stressed or lacking clarity and focus – take the time to be quiet, focus on your breath for a few minutes and allow your stress to subside. This is in essence what mediation is. if you aren’t already meditating, why not give it a go? The best test is always seeing if it works for you. There are many mediation resources to help you get started, try searching for an app or visit Youtube.

AuthentiC Mexican cuisine WordS Vanessa Ortynsky PhotoGrAPhY charlie JacksOn Alvarados Mexican Cantina has roots in Christchurch’s restaurant scene that trace back almost 35 years. the original location became something of a postcard for the September earthquake when the walls of the previous location crumbled, eerily revealing the undisturbed restaurant interior. one year later, just in time to celebrate Mexico’s independence day, Alvarados reopened in its current location on Stevens Street in Waltham. For nearly five years, Alvarados continues to serve truly authentic Mexican food at a time when so many establishments have begun to pivot towards contemporary fusion and shared plates. in the kitchen, the food is proudly prepared by Mexican expatriates, who strive to deliver the most authentic dishes using locally-sourced ingredients. the à la carte menu offers entrées and mains that range from the famously original rellenos to tex-mex mainstays such as the crowd-pleasing nachos. tacos de carnitas and Baja fish tacos are

some of my favourite authentic Mexican dishes; it’s refreshing to see them featured on the menu. Filled with rice and chicken and topped with cheese, salsa and guacamole, the hearty chimichangas are completely satisfying. they are some of the best i’ve had anywhere. the drinks menu features frozen margaritas in original lime as well as strawberry, blackberry and a myriad of other flavours. You’ll also find beers that extend beyond the standard Corona and dos equis. the dining experience at Alvarados is as close as you’ll come to authentic Mexican cuisine in Christchurch. traditional Spanish ballads softly serenade us as we dig into our mains – lovingly prepared dishes that transport us to the warmth of Guadalajara. it’s reassuring and surprising to discover a Mexican cantina in Christchurch. the owner Julie also reveals that tables are pushed aside later on in the evening for salsa dancing. i’m already looking forward to celebrating Mexican independence day on September 15th.

Situated directly opposite the stunning New Brighton Pier, The Pier View Resturant is a top quality eatery that’s popular with both locals and tourists alike. With a delicious, à la carte menu along with chef’s specials, there is something for everyone at this beautiful location. The restaurant is well known for its famous Sunday three-course special and great food at very reasonable prices. The main menu has New Zealand classics with an international influence and European treats. For a starter, try the smoked salmon and Parmesan risotto

balls with fried capers and balsamic glaze, or the sautéed chicken livers with shallots and orange pepper sauce. For the main affair, hugely popular is the slow-cooked lamb shanks, dressed in a rosemary jus and served with green pea mash, crispy sea salt potatoes, caramelised onions and mint vinegar. For poultry lovers, the scrumptious cashew-crusted chicken breast with chive mash, wilted spinach, asparagus and hollandaise sauce is scrumptious. There is a selection of mouth-watering desserts including custard-filled crispy

profiteroles coated in chocolate sauce and served with whipped cream and vanilla bean ice cream. Or, clean your palate with a serve of aged cheddar, onion jam, walnut bread and crackers. The restaurant is available for function hire and makes a stunning setting for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries as well as work functions. The chef can design a menu to suit your requirements, taste and budget. Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5.30pm, the restaurant also offers Sunday brunch 10.30am to 2.30pm.

st margaret’s art exhibition and sculpture garden The cold, wet night could not dampen the spirits nor curb the joy of those attending the opening of the art exhibition and sculpture garden held at St Margaret’s College. Jewelled lights gleamed in puddles, the colours bouncing off the sculptures standing in the rain touched Cranmer Quad, providing myriad attractions for the eye. Within the Old Girls’ Atrium, works hung along walls to entice guests to look, consider and be enriched for doing so. TreeTech 20Th BirThday The night was chilly and the darkness which hung like a shroud over the Botanic Gardens was pierced by the light shining out a welcoming beacon from Ilex. From within, the sounds of merriment were loudly proclaiming the party in progress, celebrating that Treetech had now entered a second decade. Following the indoor festivities, it was time to rug up and, with mugs of hot soup in hand, begin the tour of Botanic D’lights. Weaving through the woods and shrubbery, the procession paused often to gaze with wonder at the magic land created with light and colour. Not a breath of wind disturbed the dells which well be inhabited by the creatures of fantasy.

It has been called “a sunny place for shady people” but Monte Carlo has always conjured up romance, glamour and intrigue. It came to pass then, that by some magic, the Medbury Parents’ Association brought the gilded playground, minus the shady types, to Christchurch. There beneath the Christchurch Casino, a steady stream of elegant ladies and dapper gents crossed the portal of Sixty6, to a fantasy world of enchantment. Cards were dealt out at tables as chips were nervously fingered, before being placed on to the altar of fortune. Across the room, roulette wheels spun like hypnotic spirals to the accompaniment of champagne popping and fizzing temptingly, until night’s demise heralded reality’s return.

Copper & pink new Store Unveiling Dr

The clatter of a busy Thursday evening in Merivale, as shoppers turned for home and the rush hour bullied the peace, were far away from the genteel party unfolding in St Albans Street. There, the sounds were the merry ones of popping corks and sizzling bubbles which welcomed guests to the opening of Copper & Pink. Photographs deep and sharp adorned the walls, vying for and demanding viewer’s attention as waiters flowed like mercury through the crowd, proffering platters of tiny and toothsome treats, with which the taste buds were seduced. The hubbub of conversation in company with the live music, acted as the evening’s soundtrack, perfect to accompany a leisurely browsing of the wares at Copper & Pink, which would make a home, a haven.

Baubles, bangles and bright shiny beads, jewels to tempt a magpie’s eye were lighting up Barrington on a recent winter evening. Silvermoon opened a cavern of treasures which, shining like angel’s eyes, enticed passers-by to enter and linger. There was little room to spare as shoppers gathered, spilling out into the concourse in a scene that resembled a child’s Christmas dream fantasy, lit by gold and, of course, silver. The promise of adornment was now close to fulfilment and the oh-so-luscious chocolates abundantly proffered, made the prospect that much sweeter. Kate Dowman, Simon Thwaites

At the time of year when one’s health can take a thumping, it is good to know where to seek comforting attention. The Christchurch Wellness Centre, which provides a haven of therapy, opened to the jubilation of all who were present. The merry sounds of the party in full swing gave a warming glow to the chilly evening. Tours of the facility were conducted and trays of goodies were offered before the official opening formalities were concluded with a blessing, made to touch the bodies, minds and spirits of those who choose to seek healing in that place.

An EvEning with StEvE hAnSEn Rob and Terry McDonald, Di

Displacing the European motoring marvels which normally inhabit the showroom at Armstrong Prestige, were rugby fans anticipating an audience with Steve Hansen. The renowned coach was top bill at the evening, which was in support of St John Ambulance. Guests were spoiled for choice by the selection of food and drink, which was eagerly devoured as soon as it arrived. Luxury auction items attracted considerable interest until the time came for Steve to speak. All eyes and ears were paying attention as he recounted many anecdotes and reminiscences of his adventures with the All Blacks. Rich and tempting desserts rounded off an enjoyable evening of being entertained by this rugby raconteur.

Fine wines and marvellous morsels made the perfect prelude for guests attending the opening night party for the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s latest production of Giselle. As the Isaac Theatre Royal slid into darkness, a fantasy world appeared on stage. The tale, told by the dancers whose limbs spoke more eloquently than words, unfolded to enchant the audience, capturing hearts and imaginations. The passion, deceit and tragedy of what has been called the quintessential romantic ballet, spun on to conclude amid swirling mist in a dreamlike forest. Still tingling with excitement, happy theatre goers stepped out into Gloucester Street, also touched by late winter mist, as home and hearth beckoned.

SCApE publiC Art AuCtiOn & ExhibitiOn EvEnt Down in the town, art is in the air. Come spring, lining a winding central city walkway, thanks to SCAPE Public Art, the fruits of creativity will stand out boldly for appreciation as rivers of visitors flow past. SCAPE’s latest exhibition Inspirational Ladies Inspired by Art, which celebrates the city’s talent, introduced aficionados to the artists whose works were auctioned amid the chaos of lively bidding. Pictures which had until now silently beguiled the viewers, were marked for new homes and to be taken into the hearts of art-loving owners.

The CounTdown To Cup week StyleTV host Andrea Allen puts our biggest fashion event on the radar.

“Know, first, who you are; and then adorn yourself accordingly.” – EpictEtus

We are officially on the countdown to Canterbury’s biggest week in the social calendar. Last month I had the pleasure of assisting ‘Real Housewife of Auckland’/Christchurch Angela Stone with the inaugural Winter Fashion in the Field for the NZ Grand National at Riccarton Park. The calibre of the styling was phenomenal. The colour palette was varied and fabulous. If this was an appetiser for the main event in November, we will have a gastronomic visual feast. So, where do you start? Look in your wardrobe. Not just a quick scan – get your hands in there and have an in-depth look at the skirts, dresses, jackets you already own. A little bit of gold may well and truly be hanging unseen to the squinting impatient eye. A simple thing like a missing button or a broken zip from a fabulous neglected item could be a minor hurdle in your race to the finish line at Cup Week. Mix up your look with old and

new to create a top-to-toe ensemble that screams you. Grooming is an essential, non-negotiable piece of etiquette for Cup Week. Especially if you are putting your best heel forward to win best dressed. Are your shoes clean? Are there any visible scuff marks? Has your dress been steamed and is it wrinkle free? Have you booked in for a manicure? Plan and book, it’s as simple as that. Make the time, grab your diary and work your way back from the main event. Book your hair, manicure, spray tan (note: great tanned pantyhose will do the trick just as well), transport and babysitters. I guarantee once you have all the initial planning done, the rest will be a breeze. See you in November at one of the best excuses to frock up in Canterbury. Remember – be you, because you’re the best version of yourself.

Treetech are celebrating 20 years in business. Chris started Treetech when he was just 19 years old, in Invercargill, and then moved to Christchurch in 1996 where he worked as a full time firefighter. He met his wife Nikki on the job and ran Treetech on his days off. He continued to work both jobs for 12 years until Treetech became so big he needed to give it his full attention to turn it into the successful

business it is today. Since Treetech was founded by Chris, it has grown and developed into the largest and most successful privately owned tree company in New Zealand. He believes customer satisfaction is key to running a superb business, and that ethos is passed on to his employees. Chris and Treetech also give generously to local charities every year.
